Lesley Spiers
Senior Lecturer in Sociology
Institute of Humanities & Creative Arts
Lesley Spiers’ teaching and research interests are wide-ranging. Previous research has included examining femininity and discourses of dieting, beauty therapists and their relationships with clients and, more recently, critique of the popular TV programme Little Britain. She is currently working on a learning and teaching research project with her colleague, Mike Webb, which is looking specifically at the way that academic subjects embed ‘employability’ into their curricula.
While Lesley teaches a broad range of undergraduate modules, she is responsible for specialist modules on the sociology of the body, gender and identity. In recent years she has supervised undergraduate students on subjects including tattooing and femininity, the symbolic meaning of hair for women, and the representation of identity via social networking sites such as Facebook. She is Course Leader for BA Sociology.
