Creating Positive Classroom Cultures

In response to a presentation done by LGBT charity Stonewall, our Primary Initial Teacher Education trainees identified a need for more support and resources to help them create inclusive learning environments. In order to support our trainee teachers tackle homophobic (including biphobic) and transphobic bullying, and support a wide range of pupils (and teachers themselves) in the classroom, staff and students in the Primary Education department have developed these webpages as part of a Students as Academic Partners project. The aim of the project was to identify materials and links that allow us to support our trainee and newly qualified teachers (NQTs) in creating positive and inclusive classroom spaces.

Nationally it has been identified that tackling bullying (in particular that which is homophobic or transphobic in nature), along with other issues of inclusion and diversity, is an area that trainee and newly qualified teachers feel most unsure about. One of the Personal Development questions in the student survey asks students to identify how confident they feel in tackling unfamiliar problems as a result of the course, and this webpage is designed by students to support their peers in developing their confidence.

A team of students, supported by one of the directors from the LGBT Foundation, were responsible for collating resources and internet sources, judging their suitability and evaluating content for the webpage. This project, and the associated webpages, support the University of Worcester’s mission to motivate and empower our students, graduates and staff to make a first rate contribution to society. It is underpinned by our belief in educational and social inclusion as a core value of this institution. It helps meet the University of Worcester’s strategic aim of making a positive impact on society by educating and developing our graduates to make a positive contribution, while establishing partnerships with other public, private and voluntary organisations. On the left hand side of this page you will find a menu below the main page heading which will take you to support for different areas (Tackling Negative Behaviour, Supporting Teachers etc): we hope you find the materials and links useful, and please do not hesitate to get in touch if you feel there are further areas for development.
