Dr Catherine Neale
Principal Lecturer in English Studies
Institute of Humanities & Creative Arts
Catherine Neale’s teaching and research interests cover three broad areas. She has published a number of articles on nineteenth-century fiction, for example on Austen, George Eliot and Hardy, with an emphasis on feminist theory and on gender issues more generally. Her interest, here, overlaps with her increasing preoccupation with cultural production and the city. Secondly, she has broadened her research to include art history: having completed an MA in Art History in 2007, her own research in this area focuses on the work of Pieter Bruegel the Elder, and she also extends her study of nineteenth-century literature to include interdisciplinary elements. Thirdly, she is working on aspects of the history of the English Language, in relation to which she has a special interest in Middle English.
The modules that Catherine teaches reflect her research: she leads the teaching of nineteenth-century literature within the Division, acting as module leader for the first-year mandatory module, and also teaching later modules on Victorian and modernist writing, Cities and Fiction, and Fantasy in the 1890s. She teaches a second-year interdisciplinary module on the American metropolis and an MA module on Word and Image (focusing on the nineteenth century). Catherine is one of the tutors responsible for the mandatory first-year English Language Studies module on the History of the English Language.
