A Sign of Real Talent

Graphic Design students from the University of Worcester have created bespoke signs for a local English Heritage property.

Witley Court signsStudents were commissioned by Witley Court, to produce the information boards to support a new venture, which consists of many new activities for its visitors, including building giant treehouses and rope webs in the grounds.

The project started back in February, 2010, when English Heritage’s Visitor Operations Manager, Wendy Amer, asked students for design ideas for information boards to assist visitors in finding their way get around the new facilities and explaining the new attractions/local wildlife.

Andy Stevenson, Senior Design Lecturer, said: “Designing wayfinding signage is just one of the many facets of Graphic Design practice that the students may be called upon to undertake when they graduate into the professional arena. The ‘live’ project set by Wendy and English Heritage has really given the students an excellent design challenge and I’m hoping that their solutions will feed into a new wayfinding signage system at Witley. A great ‘real life’ project experience for the students and skills they can take on after graduation.”

Second year Graphic Information Design student, Lucy Hodgetts said: "For me, working on a 'live project' highlighted the importance of the clients needs, these elements are essential to produce a product that are practical and would really appeal to potential visitors."

The showcase is one of a number of ‘live work’ collaborations between the University of Worcester’s Design students and local organisations.

Wendy Amer added: “The team at Witley have enjoyed looking at the students work and it has provoked lots of discussion about interpretation. We held the consultation day on Saturday, July 17th, where the student’s designs were admired by both local children and their parents.”
