Performance (Costume and Make-up) BA (Hons) Top-up Degree

In the expanding world of entertainment there is a demand for highly trained specialists in Costume and Make-up Design to work in the areas of film, television and theatre.

This course has been designed for students who have successfully completed an HND in Theatrical Costume and Make-up.

This course produces creative professionals who have the necessary design expertise, technical abilities and skills to respond to the developing challenges in the film, television and theatrical industries. You can opt to specialise in either costume, make-up or both.

You will develop your portfolio in the second semester. Part of your end of year exhibitions will include a professional catwalk presentation of costumes made over the final year. There are also many opportunities to take part in organised visits to venues of educational and cultural interest, such as museums, galleries and theatres.

The course is a one year full-time Top-up, however part-time students can study the programme over two years.

This course is run in association with Worcester College of Technology. Students study at both institutions, taking advantage of the excellent facilities and support available at both institutions.

Students will only be accepted onto the Degree Programme if they have a recognised HND or Foundation Degree (or equivalent qualification) and have gained a minimum of 5 merits overall, which should include a merit grade in one second year (level five) critical or historical contextual module
Students must attend a portfolio interview and once accepted onto the course, attend an induction programme before commencing the course
Students without the standard entry requirements, but with comparable academic or vocational qualifications, may be able to obtain entry through an Accredited Prior Learning process which will be decided following an advisory interview.

Assessment

This course has been written by specialists in Theatrical Costume and Make-up, specifically for students who have successfully completed an HND or Foundation programme in Theatrical Costume and Make-up or equivalent.

You will be continually assessed through tutor, peer and self-assessment programmes, reflective journal, written report and a variety of practical and performance work. This encourages independent learning and increases your awareness of the conceptual, productive, contextual, critical, personal and interpersonal skills involved in the creative process.

Employability

Many career opportunities exist for self-employed work. Over the last decade, large parts of the TV and media industries have developed into smaller independent production companies, and they are now producing film and video with the help of an industry network of skilled professionals. Previous graduates have gained jobs with theatre companies, as researchers, photographic stylists, in special effects and have also gone on to further study.
