Masters in Teaching and Learning MTL
Fully validated and professionally recognised, the Masters in Teaching and Learning focuses on improving teaching through investigation of, and reflection on, teachers' own practice.
The programme is designed to be integrated with teachers’ working lives. It is innovative and mainly school classroom-based, designed specifically for practising teachers who must meet the eligibility criteria set by the government.
The course aims to further improve teacher quality in order to raise standards, as well as narrowing the achievement gap, giving children better life chances.
The course will be:
Practice-based and modular
Designed to build progressively on ITT and induction to develop higher levels of professional skills
Focussed on developing practice through enquiry and the use of evidence
Personalised to meet participants’ learning needs
Validated by participating HEIs.
How to Apply
The Secretary of State for Education, Michael Gove, has stated that he has decided to stop the central funding for new participants on the Masters in Teaching and Learning (MTL) programme with immediate effect. Only those teachers who are already studying for the MTL will be funded to complete the programme.
In his letter of December 6 to the TDA the Secretary of State explains his decision:
“The quality of teaching and teachers’ professional development are of utmost importance, and I am committed to developing a strong culture of professional development where more teachers acquire postgraduate qualifications like Masters and Doctorates and where teachers are supported to progress further academically and deepen their subject knowledge. However, I also believe that teachers should decide for themselves which Masters level course is the right one for them and that a single Masters degree prescribed by Whitehall is not the right approach.”
FUNDING CHANGE IMPLICATIONS
For teachers who have already started MTL study funding will be available, via payment from the TDA to designated HEI members of the MTL Provider, for them to complete their programme. Completion is expected, normally, to take place within 3 years. In future, teachers who wish to enrol on an MTL programme will need to make their own arrangements for funding to support their study. Teachers wishing to undertake an M level programme of study should contact the University of Worcester for details of study opportunities and fees.
