Sessional Lecturer: Pre-registration Nursing

The successful candidates will join an enthusiastic, committed academic team in the Department of Nursing and Midwifery within the Institute of Health and Society.

The Department is interested in sessional lecturers who can teach a range of topics and subject matter to pre- registration nursing students and/ or trainee nursing associates. In particular, we are looking for people with knowledge and experience in one of these areas:

• leadership and management, quality processes, and contemporary issues in nursing
• clinical knowledge of assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of nursing care
• evidence- based practice

We are also particularly keen to hear from candidates who are interested in teaching clinical skills in our Clinical Skills and Simulation Centre. Simulated learning is highly regarded by students and fulfils an essential regulatory requirement in the development of competent graduates.

In addition to teaching students, responsibilities for the post will include liaison with practice partners to support students in practice, and recruitment and selection. The post holder will play an active role within the nursing team, which will include course review and curriculum development. Support will be given with this.

Core duties are outlined below, however, individual roles will vary according to the subject taught and needs of the Department. User and carer involvement in course development and delivery is an increasingly important aspect of our work, as is inter-professional and inter-agency working.

If you are successful at interview you will invited to join a pool of sessional lecturers and the institute will contact you if suitable work becomes available (your contact details will be shared with them for this purpose). We are not able to guarantee employment as it will be subject to student numbers. The number of hours available may be limited and may be offered at short notice. *If only an element of this work is offered which doesn’t involve additional preparation and administration a standard hourly rate will apply, currently £16.87 plus £3.71 holiday pay

Selection Process:

Candidates need to prepare and deliver a 15 minute teaching session on ‘how to deliver high quality care’. The session should be aimed at 3rd year student nurses, and will be taught to the interview panel.

The Institute

The Institute of Health and Society is one of six Institutes at the University of Worcester, based on the Henwick Grove Campus. It has a growing course and research portfolio, with increasing student numbers year on year. It works collaboratively with the other departments of the University, in particular with the Institute of Education and the Institute of Sport and Exercise Science. There are strong international links and world-wide opportunities for student and staff exchanges.

The Department

The post sits within the Department of Nursing and Midwifery, which is one of three departments within the Institute of Health & Society. The Institute offers courses ranging from foundation degrees in various specialities in health and social care, to honours and PhD level study in a number of disciplines.

Students on the programme undertake practice placements in Worcestershire, Herefordshire and Gloucestershire. The department is also developing a range of new continuing professional development provision. The department has an exceptional reputation for excellence and the appointee will further develop the quality of our provision through strong collaboration with our practice partners.

 

Main duties

Main duties

1. To prepare for teaching by developing an understanding of the content, learning outcomes and modes of delivery for the relevant sessions. This may involve reading in the subject area, and/or adapting existing materials and methods.

2. To prepare course materials, including setting assignments, producing reading lists, and course outlines and handouts, and ensuring that information is available to students in advance of the course and taught sessions.

3. To teach the sessions by tutorials, seminars and any other relevant form of learning method.

4. To be available for tutorial support to students at specified times.

5. To undertake marking, and other forms of assessment, ensure work is second marked and grades submitted, and provide assignments for reassessment.

6. To ensure regular contact with relevant Programme Leader and to keep them informed of progress through the semester.

7. To undertake other administrative duties related to the teaching.

8. To educationally support students in the practice environment as appropriate

9. With support, maintain personal and professional development to meet the changing demands of the job; participate in appropriate training activities.

1. A first degree or equivalent in the subject area.

2. Current NMC registration as a Nurse.

3. Evidence of ongoing CPD.

4. Currently studying towards a higher degree in a related area or aspirations to do so.

5. Relevant and successful experience of teaching.

6. Experience of clinical teaching and /or supporting students in practice.

7. A commitment to interactive teaching methods with a learner centred focus.

8. Excellent written and oral communication skills; ability to communicate confidently and clearly with a range of people including students, tutors, managers, both orally and in writing.

9. The ability to work well in a team context when required.

10. ICT competence (for teaching purposes).

Desirable Criteria

1. A higher degree in a related area (or near to completion).

2. An appropriate teaching qualification.
