A brother and sister with high-flying jobs are graduating together from the University of Worcester today.
Anne Sullivan, Cancer Services Manager and Macmillan Lead Cancer Nurse at Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust, and her younger brother James Henderson, Director of Sales and Marketing at China-based Bonsen Electronics Ltd, have just completed an MBA.
The pair have spent the last three years juggling studies with holding down their pressured full-time jobs, which for James included spending weeks at a time away in China.
“It was really tough and you have to be committed,” said Anne, who has been part of the project team leading the plans for a new radiotherapy unit in Worcester. “We’ve both worked evenings, weekends, and any free time we can to complete the course so it’s a huge achievement for us both.”
Both Anne and James, whose father Jim Henderson was a former professional footballer for Worcester and Kidderminster, achieved Distinctions, which turned out to be a relief given their sibling competitiveness.
“I was really nervous about telling Anne that I’d got a Distinction just in case she hadn’t,” James said. “Throughout the course we were comparing and contrasting; so I guess there was a bit of friendly sibling rivalry.”
As a result of completing the MBA, James has changed his career, now working in marketing. “I found so much that interested me in the course, and found I really enjoyed marketing, and now have a really good job in the field,” he said.
Anne, who completed her original Nursing BSc at the University of Worcester, followed by a Masters at Wolverhampton, added: “I’m really proud of James. It’s a big achievement for both of us and we are so pleased that our family will be with us today to share in our success.”
