Funding your Research Degree

Funding for UK & EU StudentsOne of the first questions that a prospective research student asks is 'can I get funding for my MPhil/PhD?'

The answer to this question is, ‘maybe’ - but be aware that funding for research degrees is in short supply across the UK and as you would expect there is considerable competition for what funding is available.

The University of Worcester itself offers a number of full-time PhD studentships.  These studentships pay for your fees (at the EU rate) and provide a bursary of £12300 plus research expenses for a three year period.  The studentships are normally attached to specific projects and details of those currently on offer can be found here.

The Research Councils - government funded bodies which fund doctoral and postdoctoral research across all discipline areas - also provide a range of FT studentships and now, in some cases, PT studentships. In particular, you might look at the Arts and Humanities Research Council which through its Studentship Competition allows you to submit, in conjunction with your chosen university, your own research proposal.  Please note, however, that as its name suggests proposals are limited to subject areas within the arts and humanities and there are strict eligibility criteria.

There are a range of other funders, often subject specific, who will offer some degree of financial support for research students, sometimes dependent on circumstances.  Often this support will be focused on research expenses rather than covering fees and general living costs.  For a list of these funders and any other details on research funding you should contact Dr John-Paul Wilson:
