Supporting Student Learning Conference 2011
Supporting Student Learning Conference 2011
10th Annual Learning and Teaching Conference
16th June 2011
Cotswold Suite
The themes for this year’s conference is celebrating learning and teaching and the University of Worcester.
Our key note speakers this year will be:
Professor Ray Land: Threshold Concepts and Troublesome Knowledge
Professor Ray Land will be discussing troublesome knowledge and threshold concepts and how we can work with these ideas to develop our learning and teaching practice. Intriguingly the definition of troublesome knowledge is knowledge that is difficult to teach. Threshold concepts are those which are central to an individual’s deep understanding of a subject. If students do not cross these thresholds there progress will be hindered. Are troublesome knowledge and threshold concepts linked? Can we identify them and what can we do with them once we have?
Colin Beard: Experiential Learning: The Importance of Place and Space
Colin Beard is known across the world for his work on learning through experience and has authored several popular books on this subject. In this key note Colin will explore the relationships between work place and work space design and how this influences the way people work; this keynote will be of particular relevance given that The Hive will become a new work space for our students in 2012.
Along with our keynotes there will also be a rich array of workshops and seminars presented by staff, students and partners of the University.
