What is a Social Enterprise?
…a business with primarily social objectives, whose surpluses are principally reinvested for that purpose in the community, rather than being driven by the need to maximise profit for shareholders or owners.
National Social Enterprise Day 2008 - Thursday 20th November
Please look out for details of events taking place around the three counties to celebrate social enterprise.
The Widening Participation Team and the Business Development Office are working together to promote the concept of social enterprise to students, staff, and all members of the local community. Our first event; a mini conference entitled Make a profit, Make a difference took place on 16th November 2006.
The second joint event took place on 31st May 2007. Representatives from The Network, Ruralnet, Charity Bank, Futurebuilders, Community Innovation UK, Rubus, Impetus, Midwest Rural CIC, Community Loan Fund for the West Midlands, Triodos, and Community First presented or gave 1-2-1 appointments to over 50 delegates. One speaker commented, "Really positive day, great contacts made across the board and really nice to see a different range of people. On 17th June 2008 Partners for Social Enterprise held a Shropshire launch event at Craven Arms Community Centre.
Further training and events are being planned for 2008, so please watch this space for further details.
The University is a key partner in Partners for Social Enterprise, a sub-regional network that brings together social enterprises and organisations offering support, plus other interested parties, throughout Herefordshire, Shropshire, and Worcestershire. They hold quarterly partnership meetings (rotating round the 3 counties), and a monthly e-bulletin.
